3 Things Leaders Can Be Doing Right Now to Create a More Successful Business Marketplace

May 13, 2026 By Cherie Edilson

What Can You Can Be Doing Right Now to Create a More Successful Business Marketplace?

Many organizations launch a business directory… but the ones that truly gain traction are the ones that turn into a marketplace that is actively guided and energized over time.

Here are 3 simple things economic development organizations, chambers, downtown groups, and community leaders can start doing now to help their marketplace become more valuable for businesses and the community.

1. Give Businesses a Reason to Participate
Don’t just tell businesses to “join.” Give them specific ways to show up.

Encourage them to:

  • Share seasonal services or promotions
  • Add products, classes, or workshops
  • Post hiring needs or events
  • Respond to community requests
  • Celebrate milestones or business news

Businesses are far more likely to stay active when they understand what to post and why it matters.

2. Build Visibility Into Existing Community Efforts
Your marketplace should not sit alone on an island.

Mention it in:

  • newsletters
  • ribbon cuttings
  • social posts
  • tourism campaigns
  • buy local initiatives
  • small business month promotions
  • partner meetings and events

The more often businesses and consumers see it connected to community activity, the more it becomes part of the local business culture.

3. Highlight Active Businesses Often
Momentum creates momentum.

Feature businesses that are:

  • posting consistently
  • adding new offerings
  • responding to requests
  • updating their profiles
  • engaging with the community

When businesses see others gaining visibility, they are more likely to participate themselves.

A successful marketplace is not just a directory. It becomes a living, searchable hub of what is happening across the business community right now.
